Attorney Gerald “Jerry” Lykins was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio area. Jerry graduated from Wyoming High School in 1986. Jerry attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, graduating with a degree in Public Administration in 1990. Jerry attended and graduated from Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio in 1994. While in his second year of law school, Jerry worked as a Criminal Assistant City Attorney for the City of Whitehall, Ohio, gaining his first exposure to prosecution and criminal law.
While working as a city attorney, Jerry was able to do many ride alongs with the local police department learning how police officers conducted traffic stops and drunk driving arrests. After graduation from Capital Law School, Jerry moved to Louisville, Kentucky where he was awarded a position with the Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Office. Jerry worked as a felony prosecutor for over 2 years assisting and handling a variety of criminal cases including DUI causing death and murder, Home Invasion and other complex felony cases.
In 1996, Jerry moved to Grand Rapids, and was hired to work in the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office. Jerry worked in all the Kent County District and Circuit Courts which provided him the unique opportunity to quickly learn all the local judges and attorneys. In late 1998, Jerry left the prosecutor’s office and open his law practice. In 2000, Jerry joined with attorney and now State Representative David LaGrand, to form Lykins and LaGrand, PLC. Jerry and David quickly grew their practice to one of the most successful criminal defense law firms in West Michigan. In 1996, Jerry and David separated to permit David more time to focus on his political dreams. Jerry worked as a solo attorney for the next 6 plus years.
In 2012, Jerry and Jason Jansma came up with the idea of banding together with similarly aged and skilled criminal defense attorneys to focus their efforts to create a boutique criminal defense law firm. After months of discussion and meetings Kortes, Lykins, Hunting & Jansma, PLLC, the West Michigan Defense Team was born. WMDT instantaneously changed the law firm landscape of West Michigan. No other law firm in West Michigan offers the kind of attorney skill power and legal connections to get the job done in the criminal defense world.
